The number of global air passengers increased four-fold over the past three decades and reached around 4.4 billion in 2019, but declined sharply in the following years due to the pandemic-related disruption. However, passenger traffic has recovered since then and is estimated to have totalled 2.3 billion in 2021. It is seen growing further and reaching 3.4 billion by year-end.
The Indian market is expected to grow to 1 billion passengers by 2040 from 175 million in 2019, which is much bigger than the global estimate for a two-fold increase to 10 billion passengers during that period.
