Discount retailer $FRED reported a 1Q16 profit of $1.26MM or $0.03 per share compared to a loss of $29MM or breakeven per share last year, on margin increases in general merchandise departments and the leveraging of selling, general and administrative expenses. Net sales grew to $549.55MM from $509.05MM. Comparable store sales rose 1%.
